What is a cascara?
Coffee tea or compote from the pulp of coffee berries. Today we will analyze the trending term kascara.
Cascara is a drink made from the pulp of the coffee berry. In fact, it is a waste of coffee production. Therefore, at first, the material was used as a natural fertilizer on plantations. One day, farmer Aida Battle from El Salvador decided to try making a drink from this pulp, and it turned out interesting.
- Production
Cascara is obtained in two ways: as a product of washed processing (that is, when the pulp is removed from the coffee and dried in the sun) and dry (the berry is dried whole, and after a few weeks the pulp is separated). We get dry red "petals".
- Taste
Cascara tastes like rosehip compote or fruit and berry tea. There is caffeine in the drink, but its content is low - about 111 mg per liter. It is 4 times weaker than filter coffee.
- Security
The drink is currently not sold in the EU, because the product is new and must receive safety certificates before hitting the shelves. But in the US it is sold, in particular, Starbucks released a latte with cascara syrup.
It is worth remembering that, theoretically, cascara can be a good environment for bacteria and fungi, if the manufacturer did not follow all the rules. So it is better to check the certification before use.
