What is white coffee?
Everyone has heard of black coffee, but not everyone has heard of white coffee. Today we tell you what kind of drink it is, what it tastes like and whether it is worth ordering it in a coffee shop.
White coffee is a drink made from coffee beans that have been roasted until half cooked. Not to be confused with flat white: no milk is added to white coffee, the drink is made from grain, but it is so lightly roasted that it remains light. The process takes place at much lower temperatures than usual, and the beans remain so hard that they can only be ground with a special coffee grinder.
- Origin
In Western countries, white coffee has become popular only recently, but it has a rich history. The drink originates from Yemen, where a special mixture - khawayage - was often added to the coffee beans. It is a mix of cumin, black pepper, turmeric and cardamom.
- Effect
Rumor has it that white coffee contains more caffeine, but the real data is mixed. Indeed, a small amount of caffeine is lost during roasting. However, it is difficult to say how big this difference is. Some experts assure that white coffee has 50% more caffeine, while others are sure that its level is almost the same in white and black beans.
- Taste
Such coffee will taste nutty, there will be almost no bitterness in the drink, because the natural sugars in the grain have not had time to caramelize, and the acidity will be less pronounced.
- Benefit
White coffee contains antioxidants, in particular, chlorogenic acid. It is credited with such positive effects as anti-inflammatory action and protection against heart disease. On the other hand, the drink can cause a strong heartbeat and other negative effects. Pregnant women should not use it. Research on white coffee is still not enough, so we will wait for news from scientists.
